A window into the "new economy"

Opening the "black box" of technological and industrial progress, Baldwin and Clark introduce the notion that technology is a set of tasks and the organization mirrors the design of the artifact that it produces.
The authors model builds upon the work of John Holland, Stuart Kauffman and Brian Arthur (from the Santa Fe institute) on Complex Adaptive systems (CAS). CAS have four properties:
1. Each of these systems is a network of many agents acting in parallel. The control of these agents is highly dispersed.
2. The CAS has many levels of organization, with agents at any one level serving as the building blocks for agents at the higher level. Furthermore, CAS are constantly revising and rearranging their building blocks as they gain experience. Baldwin and Clark carefully document four layers operating in the computer industry, The global financial system, the markets for goods and labor, organizations, and the design and production of computers. In Addition, the authors describe the six "modular operators", the complete set of options that can be used by agents to modify the system that can be used at any level.
3. All CAS anticipate the future. The various models, whether implicit or explicit assumptions, are constantly tested, refined and rearranged as the system gains experience. Baldwin and Clark assume that designers "see and seek" value, with value being measure in the global financial system.
4. CAS typically have many niches, each one exploited by an agent adapted to fill that niche. Moreover, the very act of filling a niche opens up new more niches. Thus, there is no equilibrium in these models, it is not about a "punctuated equilibrium". The process is a constant search for an improved fit with the environment. Moreover, the clock speed of the process should match the environment.
This book has deep implications for practitioners and scholars interested in understanding the "new" economy. I highly recommend the text.

Foundational

This is one of the most useful and practical business books I have read. At my companies we apply it at two levels.

We use the modularization rules in the design of systems and businesses. These rules (i) define what is needed to modularize a system - interfaces, communication rules, aggregation rules and (ii) a set of operators that can be used to evolve modular systems. It is best practice to design all of these (interfaces, communication rules and data exchange, aggregation and disaggregation rules and the modularization operators) into business systems. This is even more important than ever in a time of rapid cycles and transformational change.

It is also useful, especially when combined with the work of Clayton Christensen on disruptive inovation, to understand the evolution of industry ecologies. I have heard that the next volume (if it ever comes out) will go further in this direction. One needs a point of view on value-web evolution to make strategic bets. Of course one will often be wrong, the future will always surprize us. The real purpose of strategic thinking is to help us realize we are wrong more quickly so that we can respond and shape the emerging change.

Design Rules also serves as history of evolution and differentiation in the mainframe industry (there are rich veins of historical data), introduces or reminds us of variable analytical tools, and it is physically a lovely book, well designed, well bound.

Software people reading this review may think 'so what' we know all this stuff about information hiding and modularization. But I wonder, how many software systems are designed to evolve? Most decay with change. A system that evovles needs to be self similar across levels of organization, allow the modular operators to operate, represent itself to itself ... Even if object and aspect programming catch much of this, few software engineers are able to apply it at an organizatoinal or value-web level, and so their systems are detached from the environments that will select them.

Elegant Integration of Real Options and Complexity Thinking

This is an important book. John Holland, who is heavily referenced, foreshadowed its publication when he linked the concepts of real options and complex adaptive systems in a talk at the Santa Fe Institute in late 1998.
The authors clearly and persuasively explain how modular design adds a tremendous amount of value through the creation of real options. Furthermore, modularity allows for the evolution of both design and industry.
In the 1960's, IBM created the System/360, the first modular family of computers. As a result, IBM launched an industry -- and lost control over the tremendous value it stimulated.
"Design Rules" was recommended me by one of the authors' colleagues, who thought that I'd "eat it up." I did, and I'm hungry for Volume 2.

I am very pleased with it

Received my copy today. (I do wish Amazon would label softcovered books as such so they aren't bent and shoved into mailboxes) So far, I am very pleased with it. Explanations are clear and concise. Lessons dive right in, so make sure you know your kana first. The vocab section can help you muddle through if needed, but you'll find it easier if you already know the kana. To help you, there is a handy and complete table in the early pages of the book.

Essential Japanese Kanji Vol 1 is complete in the sense that it doesn't require the use or purchase of other books. It provides tables of relevant information. The quizzes have the answers in the back. It even talks about the kanji radicals.

If you are an Anki user, there is plenty of information for you to populate a thorough deck for yourself from the contents.

One practical Kanji book

I like the way this book organizes its Kanjis into themes that you'll encounter in real life. Each chapter is laid out according to where you'll see them in everyday situations. For instance, one chapter dedicated to common Kanjis found in train stations, one to those found at the bank and on ATM machines, one to those found in hospitals, etc.

I think this book is for someone who has some grounds on using or seeing a few Kanjis before because the chapters are not arranged in order of difficulty as you'll see them in many other 'learning Kanji' books.

This book helps me reorganize those Kanjis I've probably learned or seen them somewhere before but somehow found it difficult to find an occasion to use each of them in real life. So buy this book if you're having the same problem like I was.

Looking forward to the revised edition of Vol.2

Organized to be effective

Just got my copy--but already I can tell it's systematic, clear, and useable at several levels. It finally explained to me the two "sound" systems--of Japanese and Chinese origins. It is geared to those trying to pass the (U.S.) College Board Advanced Placement test--with a set of exercises at the end of each unit that more beginning learners can ignore. My only complaint is that some of the writing is too small and too gray, especially for the many-stroke characters. Maybe not a problem if you're 15 years old. There are several short appendices: Japanese names, main radicals, kanji compounds. There is also an on-kun index and a vocabulary index ordered by the syllabary. I've just pre-ordered vol. 2, due out in Oct. 2016.

A thoughtful approach that has the student in mind

This is an extremely resourceful text for students of physics, mathematics, engineering, and just about any other applied science where understanding the fundamentals of motion is key. As an extended survey of mechanics, I find this book to be a perfect supplement to textbooks in these disciplines, which are often a mixed bag. Whether suffering from clunky writing, or weak example problems that are too basic to be useful, I often think that the authors of these textbooks forget who their audience is. This book clearly has the student in mind. The prose is never too dense, and the examples are abundant and carefully explained. The problem sets present both practical and theoretical challenges, but they are also inventive and fun (rambunctious monkeys!). For those who might need a math refresher, the appendix offers a thoughtful overview of the kinds of mathematics necessary to solve the increasingly difficult problems throughout the book. I highly recommend this book to both students and teachers alike.

While Morin and Kleppener are excellent books on their own

We bought this book on a whim. I was not expecting much, when we already have Fenman, Resnick and Sears & Zemansky. So why a new book ?

Here is my take on this. This book fills the gap between theory and practice. While Morin and Kleppener are excellent books on their own, they are above levels of a high school student who does not have Calculus as their second language. There is a dearth of good problems. Traditional textbooks (Resnick, Young and Freedman, Giancoli) have cookie cutter problems that expect a routine solution (mostly application of a formula previously covered in chapter). They have excellent theory, but no practice.

That's where this current book shines at. Problems are carefully chosen and delightful. They invoke thought and are difficult.

One issue I do see is that exercises don't have answers key - and that should be corrected. Hopefully authors will make solutions available online. That is a must.

Love it! Espectacular.

Great story and great teaching. full of vocabulary and rhymes. It is a great translation, probably one of the best out there.
This book is my sons favorite. We even had it as a birthday party theme.

Great vocabulary builder, fun animal sounds and great rhyming story!

This Spanish translation of The Little Blue Truck has exceeded my expectations. While The Little Blue Truck by itself is a great story and has cool illustrations, the translated version went above and beyond to make sure it remained engaging, entertaining and most importantly FUN for the little ones. I love how the translator made sure the book would still rhyme and be fun when read out loud, and while this did not allow a literally translation of the actual wording, in some of the phrases to make sure it rhymed, the story is still accurate in terms that it reflects what is being seen in the illustrations. My son loves it and of course all the animal sounds and the beeping horn make it for a great story-time book. If you are trying to find FUN translated books, look no further, this one got it right. I will be checking out the sequel (also translated) shortly and look forward to more work from this translator.

Street Dreams

You know its hard here in these streets for Rio. Turning to a street pharmacist is the only way to keep money in his pockets and food on the table. Very ambitious and intelligent with a degree behind him, he's tried countless times to find legitimate employment with no luck.

Then there is Trinity, every man's dream, the love of Rio's life, his soul mate. Like any other couple they have there disagreements, break ups to make ups. She's had a troubled life. Ever since the death of her mother, she has been taken care of the household like a wife should in every way, if you know what I mean. Being with Rio is her only sense of peace and he has vowed to be her protector until the bitter end.

Street Dreams really tells it like it is in the streets. There was never a dull moment. Very detailed and graphic. I've read other works of K'wan and he is a very gifted writer and on point with the pen.

Snitches never prosper

K'wan really did a great job on this one. This is my first time reading a book by this author, but i will definitely be buying all the other ones. K'wan presents Rio who is very smart kid who's loyalty put him on the wrong track. Still he tries to do right and find an honest job, but how many criminals really find decent jobs. Tired of all the turn-downs he turns to the street but only part-time until unexpected circumstances gets himself into a situation he cant get out of. So he calls on the only person he knows that can help him. But favors dont come cheap. In the beginning being a full-time Capo for Prince seemed sweet with all the money that was rolling in finally he thought his dreams would come true and he would be able to provide a better life for him and Trinity. But of course it never works out that way. Snitches will bring down your whole empire, and the price to pay is death!!!!........EXCELLENT READ I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS ONE

Love in da hood

It is evident that K'wan has has major talent, he writes with a street flair spiked with a twist of passion. "Street Dreams" is a love story set within the streets of the hood. This is an excellent book starring Rio, a loveable character who dreams of holding down a decent job and a quiet life away from the ghetto. Well...I should'nt say "dreams" because Rio actually goes out and looks for employment. This cat is smart, and along with his girlfriend Trinity, they try to take the right steps to make their move. But alas...road blocks...grimey characters.

Go out and get a copy of this book you'll find it is worth your dollars.
