This book is a sequel to Porter's 'Cross Currents' so it is best to read that title first. Margaret is a troubled with an overwhelming sense of social injustice due to her unfortunate early childhood experience living in the slums of New York, experiencing hunger, homelessness, and hardships. Reuniting with her mother to the comforts of life does not solve but rather complicates her problems. Margaret's mind cannot comprehend how it is that some people have so much and others struggle every day of their lives just for food and shelter. There is no escaping this conundrum for Margaret even as she enjoys the comforts of living surrounded by all the beautiful things in life. She reunites with Ned who is a true friend but is also a constant reminder of her past. The distress of Margaret's mind is further complicated by tragedy. Her home and her wealth are sustained by profits from a manufacturing business which employs the poor and underage children. Margaret's allegiance to the way of life she experienced as a child and her comfortable life as an adult are diametrically opposed. How she works through her troubles and questionings about societal injustices is what the story is all about. In addition she sorts out her emotions about love and choosing the man who comes closest to meeting the desires of her heart. If you want to read more of Porter in this vein try the 'Miss Billy' series. They reflect another time and lifestyles that give us a glimpse of the past.

Followed her life to young woman

This story was written a good while ago as was the setting. It was well written. It was a good length and I enjoyed it very much. If there is no picture of a cover and the title intrigues you, check out the description when you're looking for a book. Otherwise I wouldn't have found this.

As I didn't read the other books I found this one a little bit confusing. However I love Eleanor Porterand found the story line pretty good though something's I didn't quite understand. Definetly wan to read the others :-)
