I'd have to admit as an actual optics major, this book served my purposes very well. There really is no way way you can go through introductory optics in 1 semester, which is how all the physics departments do it - it doesn't do the subject justice.

These are all chapters that don't require Maxwell's Equations at all, even if you knew them. The optical properties of material chapters deals with Maxwell's Equations more or less for the entire chapter.

The laser and subsequent chapters also give you a VERY BASIC flavor of expect in more specialized books.

If I had to recommend a book for actually learning the material and that has worked out problems, this would be the one. Born and Wolf is great, but only as a reference, and still there are flaws in that book as well. Jenkins and White or Schaum's Outline for Optics might be useful supplements, as I used them from time to time. Hecht is not a good book to learn out of, but a good way to learn what optics is all about.

Very helpful

I'm taking an upper level undergraduate optics course and the professor required this book. He's a nice guy, and very knowledgeable, but I find his lectures impossible to follow. I would be totally lost if not for this book. Hey, this is hard stuff guys! Don't expect a book to make it easy. So far I have none of the complaints typical of other reviewers. Obviously I'm learning. If I knew the subject better perhaps I'd be more critical, but so far I'm finding the explanations in this book very thorough and understandable. The fact that I sometimes have to read them 2,3, or 20 times before they make sense to me I rightly attribute to my own ignorance, not some failing of the author. Of course I'm looking for an in-depth understanding of optics, not some quick tell-me-what-I-need-for-the-test primmer.

Horrible book to actually learn from

Horrible book to actually learn from. You would expect an introductory book to be concise, and explain things clearly. Instead, simple concepts that can be explained in one sentence take whole paragraphs, usually in a roundabout fashion. Examples and equations are helpful enough, though. However, the editor must have forgotten to put diagrams on the same page they are referenced on. It seems like the book is constantly talking about a figure that is one or two pages away. I have not finished using the book, so I'll try to update this when my class finishes

Amazing Accessible Insights

Sprawltown is brilliantly written because it allows you to open it up to a random page, and immediately pick up something about new sustainable ideas of urban development or speculation. A broad range of topics is covered regarding the problems exacerbated by sprawl. This even includes the problems created by consumer tourism. Thinking of infrastructure as art, is a great section of the book complete with many insightful comments and great examples. Anyone in the fields of urban planning or landscape architecture should pick it up. However I think its a book that would give a good introduction to the problems of sprawl to the general public, along with many solutions as to what can be done with good planning and sustainable decisions.

A great short story.

I bought this book to help my study on Spanish. I love Gabriel Garcia Marquez, but the original is still too hard for me. This translation work is quite acurate while maintaining the flavor of Garcia Marquez. It helps me greatly and speed up my understanding. However, In addition to be a study aid, the book also provides a great deal of enjoyable reading. I recomend it for a summer reading.

Great Arrangements, and excellent editing (i.e. chord symbols)

Look folks, just to be clear I am an advanced pianist/teacher, an excellent sight-reader, an above-average improviser and I know my chord symbols. I even perform small gigs in and around South Texas, often using this book as a baseline for setting the mood in the room. I'm not a Hal Leonard shill, so spare me any accusations. The other reviewer talks about all the numerous errors in chord symbols throughout the book with exception of 5 songs (which ones, I don't know, he doesn't say). I purchased this book in 2011 despite his review on a hunch that it would be at least half as good as the others in this series (I own all of the others) and I was not disappointed. The arrangements are fantastic, the editing excellent, and Hal Leonard has done much justice to this legend with this edition. The other reviewer must have received a poorly printed copy because there are no errors in mine. If he has specific errors on specific songs then he has not mentioned them; the one example he has said about a Bb chord labeled as B maj is nowhere to be found in the book. If he can read chord symbols as well as he says he can, why not just use a fake book instead of a book of piano solo arrangements? Folks, don't allow one bad review to dissuade you from enjoying this book. It's quality.

I have six other books in this terrific series (Late Night Jazz, Swinging Jazz, Jazz Ballads, George Gershwin, Disney, and The Beatles). Arranger Brent Edstrom is at his best here—thanks in no small part to the timeless sophistication of Ellington's compositions.

Each time I get a new book from these series, I play through it and dog-ear those pieces that I'll want to come back to again and again. Typically fewer than half the songs in the book are "hits" to my mind. But in this set of Ellington arrangements, all except for four got dog-eared. The rhythms, chord changes, and fills are really interesting (and suitably challenging) throughout—definitely suitable for professional performance either solo or as lead instrument in an ensemble.

Numerous printing errors in the chord changes

The vast majority of the pieces in this book have extensive and serious errors in the chord changes. Most jazz players refer to the chord changes, so be forewarned. Flat signs are missing everywhere in the chord changes - in the chord root and alterations. There are no errors in the music notes on the staff, which is how you can verify which changes are wrong. Only 5 pieces in this book are accurate. I brought this problem to the attention of Hal Leonard, after having spent over an hour detailing examples of the pieces, measures, errors. Shockingly, they told me that I didn't understand the use of "accidentals" and that I needed to study music theory. I fell off my chair laughing!
Here's the reply from Hal Leonard Customer Service: We think that you are missing a key point of music notation: any accidentals that appear in the key signature are not re-printed throughout the music. We would suggest that you begin studying music theory. Hal Leonard publishes titles designed to help you in this endeavor. ...
So if you buy this book, enjoy the printed music, but plan to correct the changes in all except 5 of the pieces in this book if you want to play the changes.

Better than a Starter Kit

Microsoft has hung it's hat on 'starter kits' for Visual Basic .Net Express (2005) both as a learning tool and as a starting point for developers. However those who have tried to use them have found the examples to date to be buggy, hard to understand, excessively complicated and almost impossible for beginners to get to work. Sudoku would seem to be an ideal subject as one of these starter kits. However this book, with the downloadable code, is a much better option. The code works right off, and most of the basics are there. It will generate and solve puzzles. The solver uses 4 basic methods, and, if those fail, it goes to brute force.
This is not "Simple Sudoku" [...] That is a very sophisticated creator and solver with many additional functions built in. The program in this book is a junior version of that. However with the clear explanations of the code in this book and growing skills in VB .Net you can easily add extra functionality and solving methods as needed. Use "Simple Sudoku" to learn how to play Sudoku. Use this book and code to learn to program Sudoku.
This book would make an excellent introduction to Visual Basic .Net Express. It covers a number of useful techniques for a beginner. As a teacher, I am always looking for projects which are the right size and which are of interest to students. Not everything is covered in this book, however by adding one or two more projects, say an RSS reader with persistence, you have the basics of a good introductory course.

A decent start, but does not deal with advanced strategies

This is a short, straight-forward book that shows the reader how to create a simple sudoku program for Windows. I read this book cover to cover in about 2 hours. It is a very practical introduction to programming a sudoku application in Visual Basic 2005 (I'm not sure what book the previous reviewer is referring to, as this one contains no C or Java code. Any competent C programmer could convert this code easily). The book walks through the creation of an interface, code to enforce the rules of the game (preventing illegal moves), a (limited) set of solving strategies, and an algorithm for creating new puzzles.

The biggest strength of the book is that it is very practical -- you can type in (or download) all the source code and you'll have a running application. Using Visual Basic makes it ideal for the beginner/intermediate programmer (of course you need VB 2005 -- previous versions won't work).

The biggest limitation is that the solver/puzzle generator only uses four basic strategies: Single Candidate (aka Naked Single), Hidden Singles, Matched Pairs (Twins), and Triplets. It also includes a brute force algorithm. The author presents the four strategies as if they represented all of the known solving algorithms. In reality, there are a variety of other, more complex strategies that are incorporated into good sudoku puzzles (a good place to start would be the Sudoku Programmer's Forum - [...] When the aformentioned strategies fail, the program tries to find a brute force solution. While that may be fine for solving puzzles, it causes trouble when you want to create new puzzles. The puzzles created by the application's "Extremely Difficult" setting are not guaranteed to be unique. That is, puzzles at the other difficulty levels ("easy" through "difficult") each have a unique solution that can be discovered using up to only 4 solving strategies. Puzzles that are "Extremely Difficult" can be solved mostly by the existing (pretty simple) strategies combined with a number of squares that may be solvable by more advanced strategies or just by blind guessing, and they are likely not "True" sudoku puzzles because there is a good chance that they have multiple solutions.

I also have some minor quibbles with the overuse of strings to store game states, but the author does a good job of using them in an efficient fashion. There's also a chapter thrown in at the end describing the rules and some basic strategies for playing kakuro, the newer number puzzle that publishers are hoping will be as popular as sudoku. The chapter has no real relevance in the book, as it does not discuss computer implementions, and contains no particularly useful information.

In all, this is a good start for a moderately experienced VB hobbyist interested in creating a program that generates and solves (and lets users play) sudoku puzzles. The generated puzzles will either be easy to moderate, or will be a mixed bag.

My recommendation to someone who has a moderate level of VB programming experience, but perhaps doesn't know how to go about writing a sudoku program would be to use this book to create the basic program, then go to the Sudoku Programmer's Forum to learn about other strategies that they could implement in the program. If you have a decent understanding of VB and just want to mess with the code, you can download it for free from the publisher's web site at [...]

Programming Sudoku - a good book

Programming Sudoku (Technology in Action) (Paperback) by Wei-Meng Lee

This book teaches more than Sudoku, it covers the process of developing game logic development and intelligence.

There are two games covered, Sudoku and Kakuro. Only Sudoku is covered as a step by step process on developing a game generator and solver. Kakuro, has enough information that a standard programmer should be able to build a generator and solver.

The book is both informative and entertaining to read. When I was finished, I was very motivated to build my own variants.

There is quite a bit of resistance to games built with .Net, specially VB.Net. This book does a great job in showing the power of VB.Net as a competitive platform outside of game development.

The discussion on puzzle solving can be applied to any development language.

Where this book has a short coming is that it does not cover other forms of logical puzzle solving. There are plenty of other methods not covered. An appendix of those, what they are, and what the benefits of them are, would have been a nice bonus.

Over all, I liked this book.
