For much of the second half of the twentieth century, the Seventh-day Adventist church was embroiled in dissent and argument over a doctrine which was largely unknown by other Christian churches.
October 27 1979 was a pivotal date for Seventh-day Adventism. On that day Desmond Ford, responding to an invitation from the PUC (Pacific Union College) Forum, spoke to over 1000 people on “The Investigative Judgment: Theological Milestone or Historical Necessity”. Dr Eric Syme responded, expressing his substantial agreement with Ford’s presentation. Then followed a lengthy Q&A session.
The results were cataclysmic: they included the loss of hundreds of SDA ministers and the withdrawal from Adventist churches of thousands in coming years. For several days in August 1980, at great expense to the church administration, over 100 church leaders gathered at Glacier View Colorado to discuss the controversial issues.

Dear Reader, Almost forty years have passed since the events you will read about in this publication. At the time, the ripples from this controversy became a tsunami that tore through a generation of Seventh-day Adventists, leading to the exodus of hundreds of dedicated ministers and thousands of disillusioned members from the church. Many more remained inside the church they loved, but grew old and passed away without the confidence they deserved to have in the certainty of their salvation. Desmond Ford

Anglican to Seventh-day Adventist to Anglican

Prolific talker and writer simply documents his step out of Anglican beliefs (blend of Catholic and Protestant Sunday church) into Seventh-day Adventist beliefs (blend of Jewish and Protestant Sabbath church) and switch back into Anglican-like Common Prayer beliefs. Some people make a switch politely; Ford switched on the shredder. Read history of Seventh-day Adventist beliefs going through Ford's verbal/literary shredder some 40 years ago as Ford repents of his conversion to SDA. Not a book for live and let live types; aged sleeping dogs awakened. Church dismisses, church dismissed

Fascinating backstory , intrigues and scandals ( of an academic and administration nature ). The sda church has only two dogmas that are unique, Des announces that they are wrong. The sda church is still recalling from this. Ironically Des seeks to try very hard to help the church while his insights simultaneously undermine it. He speaks highly of Ellen White while clearly showing she wasn't as the sect portrays her. As an ex sda myself , now an atheist - the theological points made my eyes glaze over, despite that , there is clear thinking by Des ( from within the world of the story ). His insights and thinking might yet kill the church he loved ( loves?). They have treated him very very badly . Their perhaps best thinker exceeded them , he is their Luther. His thesis doesn't get pinned to the door - it smashes the door. It may yet have further impact .
