Homefront (Portal Wars) (Volume 3), by Jay Allan

The stunning conclusion to the Portal Wars trilogy…

Jake Taylor and his cyborg soldiers have fought their way from one Portal planet to another, moving steadily homeward with one goal in mind - the utter destruction of the corrupt rulers who sent them to hell to fight and die as pawns in a dishonest war, one started not by the alien enemy, but by Earth’s own government, as a tool in its plot to seize total power.

And now, after the fighting, the suffering, the bitter losses…finally, it is time. Time for the final invasion of Earth. Time to liberate their homeland from the totalitarian government that controls it utterly, to find those responsible for all that has happened…and to kill them all.

Jake and his warriors are hopelessly outnumbered, but they are determined to battle to the last, to sacrifice all for any hope of victory, however small. But Taylor and his soldiers are not alone in their fight, for in Earth’s shadows, in the rotting slums and the remote countryside, in dark corners and crumbling cellars, a spark of defiance has survived and grown, men and women who remember liberty, and are willing to die for the chance to regain what they lost a generation before. They are preparing…and waiting. Waiting for the chance to strike a blow for freedom.

But those who cling to power will not give it up easily. Indeed, the politicians who run UNGov will see Earth a charred ruin, the dead lying in unburied heaps before they will yield their positions. The battle is about to begin…and it will not end until only one side remains.

Is Jake Taylor willing to go all the way, to fight to the end, do whatever he must…to accept nothing less than death or total victory, whatever the cost?

A very good military Sci-Fi book that is worth reading!
By JJCEO
General Jake Taylor has finally led his Army Of Liberation through the portal to Earth. The AOL is formed of what remained of his cyborg super soldiers and the human soldier volunteers that willingly joined to liberate Earth from the evil UNGOV. They were sent to others worlds to fight an alien race and UNGOV told everyone that the aliens slaughtered human planetary colonists. The aliens were innocent. UNGOV has suppressed all the people of earth and lied to all of mankind for decades simply to gain all of the power and wealth of the planet.

An unknown portal transfers Taylor’s troops and equipment into the wastelands of Siberia but its remote location gives his troops time to arrive on Earth and set up their equipment. They need every second of preparation, after all it is 70,000 men against all of Earth’s population…..

This is the third book of this series and in my opinion the best. If you love military Sci-Fi then you will like this book. It is full of action and the storyline is twisted and the plot turns to constantly bring up new scenarios that you have not thought of. I am a fan of the books by Jay Allan and I have purchased and read over a dozen of them. This is one of the great books he has written. I enjoyed it a lot and I look forward to the continuation. This is the third book of the series.

The book does contain a few typos but for the most part it is OK. I rated it at 5 stars. Keep the good books coming Jay!

First off I love Jay Allen's novels
By Brett K Traves
First off I love Jay Allen's novels. But this one was not up to his usual level of excellence. It felt rushed and tacked together. A compelling main character became more or less a cookie cut out of the "brilliant yet tortured" leader. First time I've read one of his works and been disappointed. Was the whole concept too big to run it's course? Bite off more than he could chew? Wanted to move on to other novels? Not sure but I wouldn't recommend this book. Ironically, I would recommend his other books to any lover of military sci-fi.

Full Of Holes in the Plot
By Amazon Customer
How one rates a series like the Portal Wars is not clear. On the one hand, the book is entertaining, but on the other, it's so full of poorly conceived plot twists and inconsistencies that it is painful at times. The list is long where the author, having our hero Taylor, if faced with alternative actions, chooses the one that will get the most people killed in a glorious battle, rather than an alternate path that would have been a lot less demanding and just as successful. In the beginning we have the conscripts facing a very superior race in terms of technology, with tech so advanced that they could destroy the whole human race if they so desired. They are fighting the humans because they fear the humans might advance to their core world if not stopped. So what do they do? The put an army in the field against the humans that can be defeated by human technology. It is clear that they could have stopped the human advance anytime they wanted to. Why not? Next, the first book points out that the Tegari built factories on the worlds that they were defending against the human onslaught. After the Tegari left the field to the humans those factories still existed. And yet Taylor made no effort to utilize those factories to produce arms and munitions for his men. The Tegari didn't want anyone to know that they were supporting the rebels. Letting them have those factories would have been the direct way to do that. The first two books are full of the constant issue of having to conserve munitions because there was no way to replace what was being expended. It was also noted over and over that the portals were so small that only a couple of men could come through a time and they were disoriented momentarily when they exited. And yet in the book the UNGov was able "overwhelm" defenders of a portal somehow. And yet in another part of the story the author noted that a few machine guns could stop any travel through the portals, That makes sense. Four or five machine gun squads could hold such a bottle neck for an eternity. Such a defense would pile bodies so high that the portal would be totally jammed. In the second book when the rebel army was escaping off Juno, Taylor was worried that the UNGov armies would follow close behind. But, earlier the author talked about destroying the portal. If Taylor wanted to cut off pursuit though a portal, just destroy the portal. Simple. Given the option in the second book of using a smart campaign to defeat the Gov forces, Taylor choose to mount a all-out frontal assault with huge casualties. Why? Because the Tegari warned him about the "Darkness" that is coming back in the future. But, there was no timetable. They have not appeared for over a thousand years and neither the Tegari nor Taylor knew that such a threat was imminent. In the last book every thing was moving nicely until the end. At this point Taylor had a clear choice. Do smart thing and gain access to the Sec Gen of the UN by using the Sec Gen's number one henchman and friend to just walk in on him, or storm the well defended headquarters to stop the Sec Gen from hitting a button the would set of a whole raft of nuclear bombs. So what did the author have our hero do? Well of course we have to have a massive fight with lots of casualties, so he stormed the building. In the end, all it took was for Sec Gen's henchman, who had turned on him to save his own skin, to assassinate the Sec Gen before he hit the button. Although why he waited until Taylor was in the room with him to carry out his threat is a puzzle. That's a course that could have been used the first place. You can think of a lot ways that that scenario could be played out. I have read a lot of books by this author, but this is the first that I've had trouble with the plot as it unfolds.
